MONDAY SEPTEMBER 7TH - LONDON

Although today was a “travel” day it was really interesting.
We had ordered a taxi last night with a non-English speaking concierge – so proud of myself…got the message across and to Henry’s relief the taxi came on time (9.30). Traffic through Paris to Gare du Nord (station) is typical of mid-city traffic everywhere….hectic madness probably sums it up. The French drivers don’t seem to use their indicators at all!!!

HENRY DELIGHTED THE TAXI ON TIME

Half hour to the very impressive station and then a check in through English customs and a wait in an overcrowded, chaotic waiting area…worse than any airport lounge I’ve ever been in.

FOR YOU DAD...YOU ARE ALWAY LOOKING FOR SALT...CAN' T LOSE THIS ONE!

The train trip itself in the Eurostar was very pleasant. The first hour or so of the journey saw us whizzing through the French countryside overtaking cars on the expressways as if they were not moving!

Then the tunnel which seemed to go very quickly. You don’t notice the descent at all and this is surprising for at its deepest (some trivia for you!)-- the tunnel is 195 metres (or 278 baguettes stacked one on the other) high.

Arriving it was lifts and more lifts. We were advised to get a train to Paddington as the cost of a taxi was ridiculous……..so for 2pounds 60p each hopped onto a suburban train and arrived in Paddington.

There are two Hiltons close to each other and of course we turned left instead of right….wrong one!
A coffee stop …and a 10 minute walk saw us arrive at the “Hilton Metropole”.

We checked into this enormous place first with Globus (who told us that there were at present 9 tour groups staying in the hotel), and then with the Hotel itself.
Room 1621(16t Floor) proved comfy, and about the same size as our Paris studio.

It was nice to relax…and watch some silly Pommie TV shows as we hadn’t watched any TV (only French soccer) since we left home.

In the evening we went out for dinner... was missing Greenacre Lebanese takeaway...so found a restaurant close by and Yum!!
