HILTON BRIGHTON METROPOLE
We left the
hotel and the traffic out of London was as described by our guide Marvin (a 63
year old Irishman with a Pommie accent—and it appears a sense of humour) as horrendous!!
We went through some countryside that looked green and flat and was mostly being used for agriculture.
Our first stop was Canterbury where we walked through the Cathedral, and although an ABC (another bloody church) it was actually rather interesting. At 11a.m. every day they have a ceremony for only about 5 minutes where they ring the Canterbury Bell, turn over a page of the book of remembrance (for those killed in wars) and then say a couple of prayers. It was actually very moving!

After the cathedral we had plenty of free time to walk around the very quaint part of the town itself. There are a large number of very modern shops in the newer part we visited with very fashionable clothing stores. Clothing is quite expensive here though compared to Sydney prices. Generally quality no better or worse though. A cup of coffee and we were then on our way to Brighton.
Similar
scenery and then Brighton, quite a big town really with lots of high rise
housing estates as you enter the town.
A visit to
The Brighton Pavilion which was the residence of George 4th . He had it
decorated in “Chinese – style “(or what he supposed Chinese –style to be like
at the time. It was a well restored building inside, very colourfully decorated
but no photos allowed inside.
As we had
two hours free time and walked through the seaside part of the town and down to
the sea front. Walking right along the pier, we were fortunate that it was such
a sunny afternoon! A cup of tea in the Pavilion Park and then our hotel which faced
the waterfront. As part of the trip we had dinner provided, the dining room
facing the water. Internet very slow here so not so many photos today. An early night for an early start tomorrow.
